Alpine County's breathtaking geography and pristine environment offer a wealth of leisure and recreational opportunities, making it a magnet for walking and bicycling enthusiasts. Notably, the internationally renowned Pacific Crest Trail intersects the picturesque State Route 88 at Kit Carson Pass and hosts the nationally acclaimed cycling event, The Death Ride, which entices over 3,500 riders to the region each year covering more than 129 miles spanning five High Sierra passes. Alpine County also boasts two major recreational hubs, Bear Valley and Kirkwood Mountain Resorts. These notable events and destinations annually draw a multitude of hikers, backpackers, skiers, campers, and cyclists fostering year-round engagement.
Ensuring the safe crossing of State Routes and providing access to support facilities such as bike and pedestrian facilities is crucial to facilitating efficient and enjoyable experiences for visitors and residents alike. Recognizing the pivotal role these attractions play in the Alpine County economy, Green DOT Transportation Solutions embarked on the development of the 2018 Alpine County Active Transportation Plan (ATP). Central to this endeavor was a commitment to prioritize visitor safety and address local traffic considerations. The project commenced with the collection of invaluable community input through a series of public meetings and surveys, maintaining continuous communication with the Local Transportation Commission staff. The resulting Draft ATP encompasses a range of tailored policies designed to resonate with local communities. Additionally, it offers pragmatic design solutions for the enhancement of bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, complete with comprehensive project lists and programs accompanied by associated funding and implementation strategies. A primary focus of the ATP is to heighten driver awareness of pedestrians and cyclists on rural roadways through a multifaceted approach, encompassing educational seminars, infrastructure enhancements, safety signage improvements, and the introduction of a wayfinding program.
